As I've mentioned before, I'm a fan of boots: Boots, booties, lace ups, button ups, side zips and slide ons are all styles I like to admire. While I do admit one of the above pairs is categorized more as a sandal (I'm sure I don't have to tell you which) I thought it was an appropriate toe shot to include. I've recently found that boots are the staple piece in a NYC wardrobe that can tie your outfit together perfectly. Not only does it give you a lift and the illusion of longer, thinner legs (hopefully not shorter and fuller if you've done your homework right), but boots can also seal your feet away from the STREETS and neatly tuck your toes into the hand crafted leather or suede they deserve.
Note: I try to avoid thinking about what I'm putting my pretty pair through while dragging them down the damp sidewalks of Broadway and Canal Street. Sometimes, reality is just better ignored when it comes to your toes.
I love how the first two boots are bulging through their knitted socks, or laces while the last two pairs are kept tight in smooth-clean-leather-lines. The confining sandals against the grainy NYC concrete fulfill my dirty, beauty pleasure. Like my love for using blue contrast in a black and white layer (apologies to non-adobe suite users for any confusion), I love finding the dirty details that are easily erased in editorial spreads.
That's why this city and I work so well together: It's ugly, dirty, loud, messy, and always in your face. This is what the world really is, and I think to try and manipulate that and convince yourself that an unattainable image is something beautiful or the standard, is only ripping yourself off in the end. This city forces you to look at yourself, and truly see who you are in the morning. So when you wake up, you don't go to your closet and tell yourself how you're expected to dress, who you're expected to be, and wear whatever that is on YOUR body. YOU dress exactly how YOU want to represent your own artistic and creative identity, how great or quiet that may be. But no one here expects to see anything less then who you really are, because honestly, no one really cares.
